This climbing area was ‘opened’ in 1991 and the pioneers of the routes included the one and only Michael Cartwright himself. Most routes here are sport climbs due to the nature of the rock which is mainly quartzite that likes to fracture into horizontal edges and blocks and possesses a beautiful orange/red color. The cliffs and gorges are surrounded by lush jungle filled with wildlife including packs of baboons. The crags now contain hundreds of sport climbs and arguably will soon approach 1000 with the potential that exists. In addition to all the climbing, there are adequate trails for mountain biking and trail running.
This shot below is our friend Glenn pulling on a fine route in the gorge. You can see the potential of the area in the distance and every direction one looks there are more walls to be explored.
This is the waterfall for which the town is named. Waterval Boven means 'above the waterfall' and as you guessed, the town is up river from the falls. Pretty ain't it? Kinda makes you wish you were here....
