Party with the Township

After the STP Place New Year's dinner a few of us headed out to a local pub/club to mix with the locals. These locals are mainly the folks from what is called the "Township". My understanding is that this terminology is a carry forward from the Apartheid period when the blacks and whites lived in separate areas of a town, city or village. Today it describes the area of town which is economically underdeveloped and more poverty stricken although still predominantly if not 100% occupied by the black South Africans. I was a little apprehensive at first as I didn't know what the reception would be like but after I went in, my concerns were dispelled. The guys were very welcoming and believe it or not, wanted to talk about the politics in South Africa. Their views about the Apartheid period and current conditions were insightful, promising and progressive. They ended up being real cool and we had a good time dancing and bringing in the new year. Alex spent some time showing the guys how a French woman can clean up at pool and Agnes was a hit showing them the latest in French dance moves. Vie la France! and rock on Waterval-Boven!

...and these guys are on their 1st beer!
